What is Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the repeated inability to get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. ED becomes more common as you get older. Impotence / ED is a common problem, which affects more than 30-50% of 40-70 year old men to some degree or the other.

Various factors can cause ED such as psychological factors, physical factors, medications and other external conditions. Damage to nerves, arteries, smooth muscles, and fibrous tissues are often the most common causes of the disease.

Disorders that cause ED are:

  • Diabetes

  • High blood pressure

  • Cholesterol deposits in the blood vessels

  • Nephritis

  • Liver disease

What is ESWT

ESWT is the abbreviated form of Extra-corporeal Sound Wave Therapy. It is a new treatment for erectile dysfunction.

A common cause of erectile dysfunction is reduced blood flow or vascular supply in the penis, called vasculogenic ED.

Soundwave Therapy is a new treatment option for ED, which aims to improve blood flow in the penis in order for the patient to achieve and maintain dependable erections.

How Does Sound Wave Therapy Work?

It involves low-intensity waves similar to ultrasound waves. The impulses generated by the sound wave Therapy machine are focused onto the treatment area, stimulating the treated tissues to grow new micro blood vessels.

How Is The Treatment Carried Out?

Sound wave therapy is given as an out-patient treatment in a series of 12 short treatment sessions spread over nine weeks. The treatment is given twice weekly during weeks 1-3, followed by a break of three weeks (weeks 4-6) and then a further three weeks with twice weekly treatments (weeks 7-9).

It is a non-invasive, non-pharmacological, non-surgical therapy which aims to trigger a natural mechanism that improves penile blood flow and may allow restoration of penile function and sexual spontaneity without need for ongoing treatment.
